You might think that I’m promoting Dutch and Belgian bands more than others, because they’re close to home. That is not the case, but it’s true that I get a lot of Dutch bands for review. It’s also true that the Dutch symphonic metal scene is blooming like never before. Following the footsteps of bands like Delain, Within Temptation and After Forever is End Of The Dream. ‘All I Am’ is their first album and it’s very solid.
So many bands have joined the female fronted metal scene over the years. This results in a genre that demands the utmost best of its members and makes it unaffordable to make minor mistakes. Most of all the vocals have to be great, but also the music has to be original and interesting enough. What Jaded Star tries on their first album is very good, but is ‘Memories From The Future’ able to reach for the top?
2015 saw us some very fine releases already. Among them was the new record ‘Extinct’ from the Gothic metal pioneers Moonspell. Frontman Fernando Ribeiro was kind enough to pick up the phone to tell me, and you all, something about this new record, the songs on it and that Moonspell will not be going extinct. At least not yet.
It’s sometimes hard to find the real gems in the sea of female-fronted metal bands. Sometimes there are bands that stand up and start making high quality music. One of those bands is the Belgian ‘Ethernity’ that releases an exceptionally good album with ‘Obscure Illusions’.
The Symphonic metallers of Kamelot have announced the artwork and tracklist of their upcoming album.
‘Haven’ as it is called, will be released on the 5th of May in the USA and the 8th of May in Europe (and the rest of the world). It will be released through Napalm Records in a standard edition and a deluxe edition, containing instrumental and orchestral versions of the songs.
After ‘Silverthorn’ this will be the first album completely written with the new vocalist Tommy Karevik in mind. Also Aliza White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Troy Donockley (Nightwish) and Charlotte Wessels (Delain) will be present as guest musicians.

It’s always a pleasure to get to know new, inexperienced bands. The most fun new bands obviously come from your home country, because you can see them live, or stumble across them as they play somewhere were you accidentally show up.
Releases from the beginning of the year always seem to slip away at the end. “Is this really a 2014 release?”, is a question that I ask myself way to much. Also, as a Dutchman, it is inevitable that there is a Dutch release in my list. It is listed on the last place, but the fact that it’s good enough to be in the list, says enough.
To all who think this is important: the symphonic metal band Nightwish will release their first single ‘Élan’ on the Thirteenth of February!
Nightwish will release their new album somewhere in the spring of 2015.
This will be the first album to be sung by the Dutch vocalist Floor Jansen. Also, drummer Jukka Nevalainen has passed on the recording of the album due to a severe case of insomnia.
His place behind the kit will be taken by Kai Hahto, mainly known from ‘Wintersun’.
